Innovative, Cost-Effective Technology Targets Mine Dump Stabilisation, Soil Erosion Control and Faster Ecological Recovery; Machine Enables Spraying Up to 50 Metres

FATEH LIVE, DESK.

WEST BOKARO, October 23, 2026: Tata Steel’s West Bokaro Division has launched a hydroseeding initiative to accelerate environmental restoration across its mining areas, marking another step towards sustainable mining practices. The technology is designed to stabilise mine dump slopes, control soil erosion and promote faster vegetation growth in challenging terrains where conventional plantation methods are often difficult and time-consuming.

The initiative combines innovative technology with environmental management to support the reclamation of mined-out land, improve slope stability and strengthen ecological recovery.

Hydroseeding Technology: A Smarter Approach to Mine Restoration

Hydroseeding is an advanced seeding technique in which a specially prepared mixture of seeds, mulch, water, fertilisers and other soil-enhancing materials is sprayed over the target area using specialised machinery.

The method is particularly suitable for mine dumps, overburden areas and steep slopes where conventional plantation methods can be challenging. By enabling faster and more uniform coverage, the technology helps establish vegetation and supports the restoration of disturbed landscapes.

More Than 50 Acres Covered Under the Initiative

Tata Steel’s West Bokaro Division has covered more than 50 acres under the initiative, including mining areas, nurseries and mine dumps.

According to the company, the hydroseeding machine has a spraying range of up to 50 metres and can effectively cover dump slopes extending up to 80 metres, helping reach areas that are otherwise difficult to access.

Initial results have been encouraging, with healthy vegetation growth and improved coverage across treated slopes.

Key Environmental and Safety Benefits

The hydroseeding initiative is expected to deliver several benefits for mining operations and environmental management:

– Soil Erosion Control: Vegetation helps protect exposed slopes against soil erosion.

– Slope Stabilisation: Plant growth supports slope stability and may help reduce landslide risks.

– Faster Green Cover: The technique promotes quicker vegetation establishment and ecological recovery.

– Moisture Retention: Mulch helps retain soil moisture and supports seed germination.

– Enhanced Workplace Safety: Reduced manual intervention in difficult terrain can minimise workers’ exposure to challenging conditions.

– Efficient Land Restoration: Mechanised spraying enables faster coverage of large and hard-to-reach areas.

By promoting vegetation growth on disturbed land, the initiative also supports biodiversity and contributes to improved environmental conditions around mining areas.

Kousik Gayen Highlights Cost-Effective and Responsible Mining

Kousik Gayen, Head of Planning, West Bokaro Division, Tata Steel, said:

“West Bokaro Division has pioneered the adoption of hydroseeding technology at Tata Steel, introducing a cost-effective and innovative approach to challenging mined-out and overburden areas. The initiative promotes faster slope stabilisation and ecological recovery while minimising manual intervention in challenging terrains and enhancing safety. This reflects Tata Steel’s commitment to responsible mining and environmental sustainability.”

Advancing Tata Steel’s Sustainable Mining Vision

The hydroseeding initiative reflects Tata Steel West Bokaro Division’s continued focus on innovative, environmentally responsible and safety-driven mining practices.

By accelerating vegetation growth, supporting the restoration of mined-out land and improving the stability of mine dump slopes, the initiative represents a technology-driven approach to balancing mining operations with environmental responsibility.

As mining companies increasingly focus on land reclamation and ecological restoration, initiatives such as hydroseeding offer a practical approach to rehabilitating disturbed landscapes and advancing the goals of sustainable mining.
